Silence During Rush Hour Everything Stopped - 1632 Words

Silence during rush hour†¦ everything stopped. What was it? These were the last thoughts to go through my adolescent mind. These very few minutes of my whole eighteen years of living have always come back to mind whenever I revisit my memories about life and death and how I should cherish life for what I have. That day changed my views; my views on people and of people as individuals, having lives separate from my own very censored life until that point. This day started out like any other Saturday, a busy morning of the same old thing, staring at the same blotchy painted ceiling the moment my eyes peered open from the ringing in my ears, from my alarm clock and hearing background noise, of guns shooting from the newest R.P.G. game my†¦show more content†¦As a child I would additionally have great adventures of traveling like those actors on television seeing the more luxurious things in life from the cars they drove to the food they ate it was like another world in com parison seeing a new country and having new extravagant experiences such as riding on the backs of enormous elephants into the vast jungles of the Amazon Rainforest or becoming a race car driver in the South of France, bobbing and weaving between streets in my expensive Ferrari. These were just glimpses of a life not meant for me at the time of being a prepubescent child. Finally I rolled out of bed after I let my mind wander into the more fanciful things about a highly unlikely future. I suddenly plummeted on to the hard wood floor but thankfully a mountain of clothes cushioned my fall. This sure woke me right up. After a while I picked something out to wear. That day in particular I remember that I wanted to look less like a child and more â€Å"adulty† as I used to call it. For some reason deep in the back of my closet I surprisingly had something that was calling out for me to wear proudly. I started to smell my mother’s usual breakfast for Saturday morning but it smelled a little different this time, so whilst my stomach was rumbling and grumbling and my mouth started to salivate to the oh so delicious smells coming from the kitchen, I quickly finished getting dressed. I then ran downstairs in a hurry to

Ability to Prepare International Human Resource Management

Question: Discuss about the Ability to Prepare for International Human Resource Management. Answer: Introduction of Australia and scenario of international human resource management The companies that want to expand their business in overseas countries must have the ability to prepare a strong group of skilled employee, who have the knowledge and aptitude of performing business deeds competently in the overseas countries and dealing with unpredictable difficulties efficiently (Armstrong Taylor, 2014). In the present study, the chosen country is Australia, where the organisation wants to send its team of 10 senior executives for an important assignment. The organisation has gained significant reputation in Singapore since its establishment. Therefore, to maintain its reputed position and competitiveness in the overseas market, the company wants to ensure that the staffs it is sending to Australia are able to survive in different environment of the country and perform efficiently. Therefore, the human resource director is responsible for collecting and providing necessary information regarding climate, language, and culture and working style of their Australian subsidiary for increasing their knowledge and confidence of performing tasks effectively. Organisational structure and design of the overseas subsidiary comparing with the headquarter in Singapore Different organisations adopt different organisational structures and designs based on the cultural dimensions of that country. Hence a significant difference can be seen in the organisational structures of the headquarter situated in Singapore and the subsidiary in Australia. With the help of Hofstedes model of national cultural dimensions the comparison between Australia and Singapore can be done effectively (Berman et al. 2015). Figure 1: Hofstedes national cultural dimensions (Source: Budhwar Debrah, 2013) In terms of power distance, Australia score very low, 36. In this country, hierarchy is set up for convenience. In the organisation of this country, managers remain always accessible and they rely on the team and individuals for their proficiency. Information is shared frequently to among the managers and employees and direct, informal and participative communication is carried out among between superiors and employees. On the other hand, Singapore scores high in this dimension, 74. The Confucian background dominates the society of Singapore and a unequal relationship can be seen among people. In the organisation, the power is centralised and managers are deepened on the rules and their bosses (Bratton Gold, 2012). In the dimension of individualism, Australia scores 90, as the culture is extremely individualist. As per this dimension, employees have to be self-reliant they must display initiatives. Employee promotion and hiring are done considering their skills and knowledge. Singapore scores 20 in this dimension. It denotes that organisational structure is based on group work and all the group members are responsible and loyal to each other. Indirect communication is carried out among employees and relationship has an ethical basis and has priority over completing tasks (Aswathappa, 2013). In masculinity v femininity, Australia scored 61, which indicate it as a masculine society. Individuals behaviour within the organisation is influenced by the shared values that they must attempt for being the best. The pride and success of Australians is the basis of hiring new employees and promoting the existing employees. Singapores score is 48 in this dimension and it is a feminine society. Conflicts are ignored in clandestine and ultimately harmony is curial (Mathis et al. 2016). Figure 2: Comparing Australia with Singapore (Source: Storey, 2014) Uncertainty avoidance is the process of dealing with future that is done in different ways by different societies. If employees feel much threatened with the uncertainty then it reflects on the score. In this dimension, the score of Australia is moderate 51. Singapore scores 8 in this dimension. Here, employees are stand to so many rules due to high PDI (Alfes et al. 2013). In the dimension of Long-term v. Short-term orientation, Australia scored 21 that denote its normative culture. Therefore, people in the organisation are more concerned with attaining quick results as compared to saving for future. The score of Singapore is 72 in this dimension. It signifies that cultural qualities support long-term investment like sustained offers, persistence, thrift, being bare with resources, slow results and so on. They believe in carrying it open communication and focuses on the way of doing business (Purce, 2014). Australias score is 71 in the indulgence dimension. It is a luxurious country. People live a indulgent life and spend money as per their wish. Singapore scores 46 in this dimension, which is intermediate. Hence, it is difficult to determine the penchant on this dimension (Stahl, Bjrkman Morris, 2012). Analysing the staffing process for the overseas project According to Renwick, Redman Maguire (2013), while recruiting employee for international assignment, it is crucial for the HR director of the company to identify the level of international competitiveness of the probable applicants. In order to increase the strength of the team is to be send in Australia the HR director decided to recruit employees from the outside of the organisation. It is necessary that all the 10 members of the group remain informed about the troubles of international business. Moreover, the HR director must have the information regarding the availability and skill of the labour market. In order to recruit the right employee at a right time, the company would follow the ethnocentric approach, and would select staffs only from the parent country. The rationale behind following the process is, the employees of the parent country can represent the interest of headquarter situated in Singapore, in a superior manner. The process contains four steps are self-selection , creating an applicant pool, assessing technical skills and making shared decision (Ehnert, Harry, Zink, 2013). Although, cultural difference influence the process of selecting; however organisations manly follow similar methods for hiring staffs across the world. This is because; the ultimate objective of any recruitment and selection process is to recruit the most knowledgeable staffs. The company would carry out a session of personal interview after short-listing the resumes of the applicants. Then the applicants, who would clear the step, would appear in the test. The test includes personality test, drug test, physical test and cognitive test. After that, the most eligible candidates would be selected for the overseas assignment (Jackson, Schuler Jiang, 2014). Analysing the process of training and development for the global assignees In order to deal with the uncertainties of the overseas market and perform competently, the recruited staffs would be provided with a cross-cultural training. In this type of training, employees would be trained for increasing their skills and knowledge of emigrants to live and perform effectively and gain broad life satisfaction is a different host culture. It would help the employees to enhance cross-culture adjustment and cross-culture interactions (Griffin Pustay, 2012). Effectiveness of the training is reflected by the behavioural, affective and cognitive changes that occur at the time of CCT event. For increasing the efficacy of the CCT or the changes occurs during the training, the HR director has to follow a systematic approach for designing the CCT programme effectively. This should follow some sequential steps are as follows (Jackson, Schuler Jiang, 2014): Identifying the form of international assignment for which the CCT event is required Determining the particular CCT program needs Setting up goals and measured to determine the effectiveness of the training Developing and delivering CCT event Analysing the effectiveness of the training program This process would be helpful for the company to analyse the existing skills and enhanced skills of the staffs after the training is completed. Analysing the remuneration package of the global assignees The assignees are to send for the global assignment should be provided with an appropriate remuneration package. Mello (2014) stated that while setting a compensation package, most of the HR managers follow the balance sheet approach, as it helps to set the accurate remuneration for employees based on their position and responsibilities. Using this approach, first the HR director would consider the recent position of the employees with respect to their benefits, taxes, income and other expenses and thus, would prepare a balance sheet of income. Further, the recent situation would be compared with the income, taxes and other expenses related to the overseas assignment in Australia. Finally, the higher costs would be debited and lower costs would be credited for making the remuneration package of Singapore and Australia equal. As, the daily expenditure of Australia is higher than as compared to Singapore; hence, it would need more money to Australia for maintaining the equality of the lifestyles of the employees. Figure 3: Balance sheet approach for setting remuneration package for the overseas assignees (Source: Jiang et al. 2012) Conclusion Hence, it can be concluded that international human resource management require significant skills and abilities of the human resource manager. It is the responsibility of human resource director or manager of any organisation to identify the business and physical environments of the overseas country, where the company wants to spend their staffs for completing a project. This requires carrying out a comprehensive session of recruitment and selection that would follow ethnocentric approach and cross-cultural training and development. It is essential for recruiting and selecting the most eligible staffs for the overseas assignment that can provide the company the highest competitive advantages form the global marketplace by completing the assignment successfully. Space Propulsion Essays (2597 words) - Rocket Propulsion

Space Propulsion RESEARCH I/II LARRY PECAN FINAL REPORT 9-27-98 INTRODUCTION The following is a research project on Space Vehicle Propulsion. It shall consist of four sections, each discussing specific topics. Section One lays out the basic ideas of rocketry. Section Two compares Rocket Propulsion Systems, and shows the basis for the comparison. It also shows how each specific Rocket System works and Section Three gives a description of how Space Propulsion has evolved and contains a conclusion. SECTION 1 The Basics Section One is a brief description of the basic properties of Rocket Systems. It defines the key terms and shows how a basic rocket works. It also shows the State if The Art. I have chosen to do my project on space vehicle propulsion. Basically, this means that my research shall be based primarily on rocketry. Rocketry is a way of propulsion that has developed in numerous ways since it was first used to propel fireworks in the 16th century. It has emerged into an extremely complicated science that few actually understand. Most space rocketry in America is used in NASA (National Aeronautics and Space Association) space projects. NASA, a government association that focuses on space exploration, is the main user of rocket technology. It is used mostly to power their satellites and shuttles into space. Pushing an object that weighs as much as a space shuttle does directly vertical until escaping the Earth's atmosphere requires a tremendous amount of power. This is why NASA uses rockets. Rockets are essentially the most powerful forms of propulsion there is today. Space Vehicle Propulsion is based rocket engines. The basic principle of rocket engine is that when fuel is burned in the engine, the reaction mass is expelled at high speeds. As a result of Newton's law of action and reaction this pushes the vehicle in the opposite direction of the one in which the reaction mass is moving. Thrust is the force that the engine exerts on all space behind it in order to ?push? the vehicle forward. Efficiency is the way that the quality of rocket engines is measured by. It is measured by the time it takes for one kilogram of propellant to create one kilogram of thrust. The goal of my research is to find out what makes these engines more efficient. In rocketry, the state of the art is extremely hard to define, since there are so many different forms of rocketry ranging from liquid propellant rockets to fireworks. The state of the art though is probably nuclear powered rockets. It is much more efficient because it does not use chemical combustion like most rockets do. Instead NFRRs (Nuclear Fission Reactor Rockets) heat hydrogen in a fission reactor which expels the propellant at blistering speeds. Much research is being done with NFRRs. They are still highly experimental because of the dangers that could be associated with them. The NERVA (Nuclear Engine for Rocket Vehicle Application) was one of the most extensive NFRR research projects, however it failed because of the inability figure out an approach to putting the research into a developmental stage. SECTION 2 Specific Rocket Propulsion Systems Section One has laid the foundation for further research in the are of rocketry. Section two shall discuss properties of efficiency in more depth, it shall lay out the types of rockets in existence now. It shall also show which type of rocket is the most efficient. After this section, the next one shall describe how the reasons for these specific rockets efficiency and depending on the outcome of that report, the topic of the fourth shall be decided. EFFICIENCY Efficiency is the most important part of my research as yet. Since the object of my research is to find out which type of rockets are the most efficient and why, the reader of this paper must have a basic understanding of efficiency. Once this is established, new definitions will come into play, all of these shall be crucial in the understanding of the paper. Terms Needed To Understand Efficiency G- a unit of acceleration [equal to 9.8 meters/second/second (accelerating at a pace of 9.8 meters per second every second)] Specific Impulse (Isp)- A measurement in seconds of efficiency. Properties of Efficiency Efficiency is the most accurate indicator of rockets performance. As stated in the aforementioned definitions, specific impulse is the basic

How To Be Productive When You’re Unemployed

How To Be Productive When You’re Unemployed Being unemployed can be a scary thing. The freedom to sleep in and watch television is great, but the lack of financial security can be panic-inducing. No matter whether you quit or were laid off, here are some strategies for how to make the most of your transition time. 1. Dig DeepThe first key is to understand what went wrong at your last job. Be as honest with yourself as possible. Was it the job, or was it you? Whether you left of your own accord or not, think about why you had to leave without a back-up plan in place, and what you can do to prevent such a situation in the future. This will help you clarify what you want most now, and how to get there and stay put. It will also help you understand your self better- from your unchallenged strengths to your unfortunate habits. Take a little time for stock-taking, soul-searching, and self-improvement.2. Find Your PassionWhat do you want to be when you grow up? What kind of work appeals to you and why? Where do you see yourself in fi ve years? What are you doing on a daily basis? What kind of company do you work for? Finding the answers to the questions of what drives you will only help you find a workplace that will keep you motivated and inspired.3. Prepare to ApplySpruce up your resume, check in with your network, jazz up your profiles, and keep up in the latest research and trends in your chosen field. Don’t get caught with a job application on your hands and nothing to show for your time off. Narrow your search platform, select the handful of companies you want to be working for, and start charging forward.4. Get a Temp GigIf you need cash, join a temp agency. It’s not a permanent solution, but sometimes it can lead to one. And besides, you’ll make a little extra money and stay in the game. You can also find online freelance work and stay afloat by working remotely.5. Do Something ElseUse your time to volunteer, or take a course, or learn a new skill. You may never have time like this a gain in your career. Use it wisely and you’ll be in a much better position when you meet your next opportunity.6. Be PatientFinding a job doesn’t happen overnight. Keep track of your progress, however incremental. Celebrate the small victories, the little tasks completed, and the new contacts made. Plan out your daily and weekly goals and chart your progress. Even if it feels like nothing is happening, you’ll still be able to see what you’ve accomplished.7. Be Good to YourselfSelf care is important. Make sure you’re being healthy- eating right, getting plenty of sleep, and exercising. Give yourself a wellness makeover. You’ll be that much more attractive to prospective employers when the time comes if you do. But also take some time to pamper yourself- indulge your hobbies and interests. Get a bit of joy under your belt. Do something each day that makes you feel good, that flexes your happiness muscle, so to speak.8. Keep to a SchedulePerhap s the most important bit of advice is to make sure you don’t fall victim to the amorphous lack of structure in an unemployed day. Make a daily schedule (when you research, job search, exercise, relax) and stick to it. This will help you build better habits- and keep them. And will keep your teeth sharp and workforce ready for when the time comes to rejoin the race.

Business Economics for Sustainable Living

Sustainability has some main pillars or rather aspects and these aspects were identified in the year 2005 during the world summit on social development. These aspects contribute to the social science and philosophy of sustainable development. These aspects have formed the backbone of dealing with the main areas that the world focuses on. As described by Brundtland mission, sustainability is a development aspect which meets the present needs with no promise of the future generations’ abilities in meeting their needs (Holden and Linnerud, p 175). Therefore the future has to be considered while making present decisions. The main two aspects include economic development ad environment aspects. Most people have had disagreements based on political ideologies regarding what is and is not economically sound. It has thus proven to be very problematic. The manner in which this aspect affects business, jobs and employability is also still a debatable issue. Economic development mostly deals with the process of how business incentives are provided in situations where such businesses and other organizations are supposed to adhere to the sustainable guidelines that are found beyond their normal requirements for legislation (Ellis and Moarif, p 11). This aspect also encourages and fosters incentives for an average person in which they are able to do their activities to the much they can. It’s seen that an individual may not achieve as much as a group would have because for some effects to be felt they have to be cumulative. The consumer nature of the supply and demand market has made the need for many resources in the modern life to be very high on a daily basis. From the environmental aspect what matters most is how we get whatever that needs to be consumed. Therefore if people are given whatever they want with no promise to the quality of life then this is referred to as economic development. This is more relevant in the developing countries where reduction in the financial burden and the ‘red tape’ of doing things right is still a big issue to deal with (Chan and Lee, p 249). For economic sustainability to be felt the human munity in the globe should be able to sustain their independence and gain access to the required resources as well as finances so as to meet their needs with ease. The systems of economy ought to be intact and all the activities be made available to everyone for instance their needs to be sources of livelihood that are secure enough. The economic sustainability is involved with ensuring that businesses in place are able to make profits and their operations do not in any way create environmental and social issues which are likely to harm the success of the business which may be envisioned to be long-term.   If any nation focuses on environmental and social issues the profitability of the economy will definitely flow. This is because most of the social initiatives tend to have a great impact on the behaviors of modity consumers as well as the performance of employees (Perrini, Russo and Tencati, p 291). On the other hand environmental initiatives like efficiency in energy supply and mitigation of pollution has a direct impact on waste reduction creating a good environment for the economy. Most people know what they need to do to protect the environment and especially from pollution. However the small things that have been neglected are some of key contributors to environmental pollution and thus loss in terms of sustainability. Such things like recycling, reduction in power consumption through switching off power when not in use, walking some short distances as opposed to using vehicles if assumed can lead to great environmental destruction. There are regulations for businesses in which they are supposed to keep the carbon emissions low as well as prevent pollution. Incentives exists which promote projects for installing power sources that are renewable in businesses and homes. This aspect is thus the main concern regarding the future of humanity (Dempsey, p 257). This aspect offers definition on how the environment should be protected and a lot of focus is placed on elements that seem to stress the environment. It’s concerned with how technology can be used to drive a future that is green. The developments that focus on biotechnology and technology are important to attaining environmental sustainability and thus protect the future environment from any damage that may be caused by technological advances (UNPF, p 7). To attain environmental sustainability ecological integrity has to be maintained. The earth’s environmental systems need to be kept in balance and the natural resources in the environment need to be consumed by human beings at a rate in which they can replenish themselves. The systems and activities in place should also be able to reduce the impact of the environment on the environment. When it es to the resources that are renewable the rate at which they are harvested is not supposed to exceed the rate at which they regenerate back (Maslow, p 58). In relation to pollution the rate at which wastes are generated from the ongoing projects should not go beyond the capacity for assimilation by the environment. In case of the nonrenewable resources their depletion requires the development of substitutes that are renewable. Such goals include zero waste by the organization, reduction in the use of plastic bags and ing up with initiatives that reduce carbon footprint through management of energy consumption (Ebner, p 8). Some organizations like Nestle have identified the main priority areas regarding environmental sustainability such as agricultural raw materials, water, packaging that is specific to their beverages and food and manufacturing and distribution. In relation to energy use Verizon pany has initiatives that aim at environmental sustainability like the recycling of tel equipment and reduction in energy use through provision of flexible working conditions at work, it has also worked on reducing   intensity in carbon and getting some more efficient solutions to its fleet that is eco-friendly (Jackson, P 21). Therefore this environmental aspect aims at acknowledging the necessity o f enhancing and maintaining the biophysical systems which sustain life with a focus on the natural ecosystem structure and the interactions which exist among them. Innovative ideas have contributed a lot when it es to ensuring sustainability is achieved in different sectors such as environment, economic sector and even the social sector. Such innovations include; innovation from new light technologies have invented air carbon which is a plastic material that is carbon neutral produced from greenhouse gases such as methane (Eurostat P 15). This is used in the packaging and furniture industries in which it matches oil based plastics both in performance and price. This innovation has helped solve the issue of non biodegradable nature of plastic bags. High energy savings have also been archived by the use of view intelligent window. This window regulates the light and temperature of the room in which it’s used. It’s been mainly designed for mercial buildings so as to eliminate the need for shades and blinds. Outerwall pany has recently introduced outerwallecoATM which is a network of recycling kiosks that are automated for the tech products (Jacobs P 36). Customers can easily follow simple steps and be able to recycle old tablets and phones and any other electronics and receive cash in exchange. Powwow energy is an innovation in which unnecessary losses of resources especially water are prevented. The powwow energy detects any water leaks from an irrigation system that is used in agriculture and informs the farmers immediately for repair. The Retroficiency software is designed to fight losses of energy in buildings. The data sets are used by Retroficiency to make suggestions on energy saving ideas for both businesses and homes. It works on the bination of both energy analytics and the models of buildings with the use of data that they get from the already existing energy audits to give out ideas relating to energy saving. The BioTrans system is used in restaurants where it’s installed to collect and grind any leftovers into a biomass that is homogenous (Jenks and Dempsey, P 175). There has been the invention of DessoThe AirMaster a form of carpet which is used to capture pollutant particles and fine dust from rooms thus providing healthier indoor climates. It’s made of recycled carpets and proves to be better than the hardwood flooring when related to prevention of allergies. From the discussion above its evident that sustainability is not just matters environment but in the many definitions of sustainability we are able to find the concerns about social equity and the development of the economy. It’s in this regard that the motivations behind sustainability are in most cases diverse, plex and personal. It is almost unrealistic for one to e up with a list as to why many people are working hard to achieve this goal. Thus sustainability in most cases boils down to the future the current generation is leaving for the next generation. These aspects of sustainability are therefore shared by many people who aim at demonstrating their importance in developing many policies. It’s therefore the duty of the people in today’s generation along with those of the future to create solutions that are adaptable and aim at fostering sustainability. When a pany chooses to define sustainability with the two aspects in mind then it’s easier to determine its own successful road that is sustainable. If any one of the aspects is weak or given less attention then the whole system of an organization may b e unsustainable since they are both interlinked.   Chan E, and Lee GKL. 2008. Music On Radio and Television Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words

Music On Radio and Television - Essay Example Finally, the more remarked developments ensued through the presentation of drama programs, comedies, and other shows that manifested the creation of musical themes or scores to reinforce public awareness. From among the pioneers in using musical theme was the program The Lone Ranger enabling listeners to recognize the show upon hearing the background music. As the article also revealed, the creation of musical themes were expanded to the television medium whose popularity was clearly identified in the 1950s to the 1960s. Most of the musical themes are recognizable even in contemporary times such as the theme from The Twilight Zone, The Addams Family, from among those noted. Other popular theme songs broadcasted on the television were those of Hawaii Five-O, Mission Impossible, and a lot more. During the four year span, from 1952 to 1956, the television popularized showcasing rock and roll music from the program American Bandstand, and rating musical programs where teenagers danced to pre-recorded popular music of the time. Similar formats of shows were created during the 1960s (Hootenanny), focusing on folk music; in the 1970s (Soul Train) where rhythm and blues, and soul music were popularized. Finally, the origin of MTV or Music Television was identified in 1981 that initially started on a music only format and have slowly evolved and developed through the years. Previous generation’s holding musical concerts and operas held on grand concert halls could only be heard, appreciated and afforded by a few who are financially well off. Thanks to the popularity of both radio and television, more people were able to access music in various formats and styles. These two mediums were instrumental in en hancing the popularity of music in far more audiences of a wider geographic and demographic scale (various ages, gender, races, income group). The idea that brought concerts to the listening public through the radios was profoundly beneficial to share the beauty of hearing musical compositions of various artists from past generations. The benefits were felt in terms of providing inspiration to other people with musical inclinations to learn music and to be future composers, singers, and musicians with stirred talents that can be honed to play various musical instruments. The shows from the television were musical scores and themes were created (which actually started from radio programs) have been expanded to the movies, where until now, major award giving bodies learned to appreciate and acknowledge those that created exemplary and outstanding musical renditions in the most original styles and forms. The MTVs in contemporary shows and programs continue to showcase diverse musical t alents, not only in terms of their ability to compose innovative and popular songs; but more so, to show creativity and ingenuity in creation and development of original compositions from popular artists.
